New Linear Flow 2 -
External arm cable and interconnect
At Origin Live we have just finalized a couple of exciting new
developments. This letter is to outline the first which is, the
design and production of a new external tonearm cable. The cable
can be retro-fitted to most tonearms either by direct hard wiring
or via a 5 din pin plug. The new cable, called "Linear flow
2" does not take the place of the original Origin Live external
arm cable. Rather, it is a much higher performance cable and high
value addition to the range.
The cable is also available as an outstanding interconnect cable
between any Hi Fi components. Phonos or XLR fittings are offered.

Sometimes announcements like this can be taken as just
run of the mill improvements. However we would like to flag
this one, as one of the biggest breakthroughs that we have
encountered of late. The results have almost left us in
a state of suspended disbelief
that a mere tonearm cable can impose such a bottleneck to
realizing performance. The original upgrade arm cable at
£75 is extremely good value in relation to most tonearm
cables on the market, however we have to say that it doesn't
come close to the performance of Linear flow 2.

I suppose it's all part of the discovery that the signal life between
the cartridge and pre-amplifier is just so critical - after all,
around 70% - 90% of the total amplification occurs at this stage
and information lost here, is lost big time.
It is interesting that phono stage designers battle to eliminate
every spare millimeter of track length in their phono stage designs.
Why? because they have found the cumulative effect to have a dramatic
effect on the sound quality. The reason behind this is due to the
nature of the signal. The exceedingly low level requires extremely
delicate handling.
Once this is fully appreciated, it leads one to consider the influence
of the external cable from the tonearm. This has a much greater
signal path length than is found in the average phono stage AND
the signal is at it's weakest over it's entire length. For most
tonearms, the total signal length in the wires for both channels
is 4 x 1.5 meters = 6meters. This is a long length for a low voltage
signal. Logic dictates that this much neglected component is full
of unrealized potential.
The new cable that Origin Live have developed is a fully balanced
design. It is unusual in employing a combination of over 5 dielectric
insulators to ensure an even response across the audible frequency
range. Great care has been taken to optimize key electrical characteristics
such as impedance, inductance and capacitance. Experimentation with
silver and silver plated strands was conducted but high purity copper
was ultimately selected for it's more natural tonal balance. To
protect against RF interference the cable has a 95% nickle plated
copper braid shield with an attached earth lead.
When it comes to listening, the most obvious aspect of the new
cable is the sheer tangibility of the sound. There is a completely
new level of intimacy and expression added to everything. Vocals
are incredibly realistic. Previously un-noticed background musical
strands can be clearly followed due to the superb resolution and
separation. The ringing and mush present in lesser cables is eliminated.
By way of impartial opinion we would like to quote the first person
to order the new Linear flow 2 external cable (along with the new
carbon hybrid tube upgrade for his Conqueror).
" I just wanted to say a big thank you to you & your
team for the fantastic upgrade. I was not expecting such a large
improvement & just wanted to let you know how much better my
system sounds now. The first thing I noticed was how much lower
the noise floor of my system has become (I didn’t think I
had a problem with this but the new wiring loom has proved that
there was noise present in my system). When the music started I
was well shocked, the sound stage filled my whole room & as
I carried on playing my records the biggest improvement was the
sound of anything being hit, it just sounded so much better (the
leading edge of any note is so much clearer) drums, triangles, bells,
even the little’s hammers in a piano just sound so right now.
The only problem I have is trying to explain how much of an upgrade
this is. I feel I cannot describe the vast improvements that have
been added to every area of my system. Most people would not anticipate
the level of upgrade to be made by just changing the output leads
and arm tube.
Thanks from a very satisfied customer." Jon.
The Origin Live Linear flow 2 cable possess all the hall marks
of a great high end cable from deep tight bass, to wonderful dynamics
and breathtaking detail.
The new cable is thoroughly awkward to manufacture and costly to
produce. For this reason it is not cheap but in relation to the
performance improvements it is a highly worthwhile investment at
£380. Although this cable is more than capable of outperforming
some really exotic wires we have tried to keep it within the reach
of a wider audience and hence the £380 does not do real justice
to it's value.
