Owner comments ON mk2 ARM UPGRADES & range upgrades

We mentioned the upgrades available to our range of tonearms in our last newsletter No7 - a number of people took advantage of this opportunity and gave very positive feedback on the immense improvement. Reviewer Channa Vithanna wrote "In particular the mkII (over the MK1) Encounter is a night and day transformation".

It may also help to illustrate the differences you get as you go up through the range of our arms - an example of the type of feedback we receive is from John Stratton - reproduced below with kind permission.

" I wanted to give you some feedback!! I just upgraded from your Silver to the Illustrious. I had never heard the arm before so it was a leap of faith.... but based on what an enormous jump it was from my rega 600 to the silver i was pretty confident. When i was originally looking for a new arm i had my heart set on the Ekos which i had listened to on my table for over two weeks. The Ekos was the best thing i had heard on my Gyro (bettering a SME 5 in my opinion) by a large margin. In the end the Ekos was too rich for my blood so i went for the Silver. The Silver was and is a nice improvement over the Ekos........i was very pleasantly surprised......i purchased it for the price and got a superior product. So i went from the best arm i have heard on my deck to a new arm(Illustrious) WOW........I have discovered a new format......SALP!! The value of this arm is off the scale. By the way according to your estimated break in time i'm not even there yet.......I only have had it on my deck for a couple of days (8-10 hours)

I DON'T KNOW HOW THERE CAN BE TWO MODELS ABOVE THIS ARM

The thing that most impresses me about your company is knowing each product up the ladder will be an improvement over the next model......this is something i don't think you always get. I can think of numerous speaker lines where i like the middle child or even the youngest child over the so called "statement" products"-
With respect

John Stratton - Canada"

Updates on fitting DC motor kits

We receive many calls from folk wishing to upgrade their decks using our DC motor kit. However it is often asked whether this is possible on their particular deck because specific fitting instructions relevant to their deck are not documented on our web page fitting notes.

Quite a number of decks have been documented on this web page and show links to specific fitting instructions. This is thanks to owners sending us notes on how they did the job and sometimes providing photos as well. This is so helpfull and provides an invaluable resource for those with the same decks considering whether to take advantage of this fabulous upgrade.

There still remain a large number of decks that are not documented but have had the motor upgrade fitted. If your deck falls into this catagory and you have the time - please contact us via e-mail with your notes (and photos if possible) on how you did the job so that we can add these to the web site.

new platter mat from sound deadened steel

Hi Fi World wrote in January 2006 "This is the best turntable mat I’ve yet heard"

Over the years we have tried many platter mats with varying degrees of sucess (or lack of it). As most of you are probably aware we do not simply recommend anything without trying it first or going on the recommendation of those whose judgement we trust ( this does not include all reviewers by the way). The new platter mat from sound deadened steel is a truly exciting development and we would say it is now king of the turntable mats - in our experience no other mat has come close to doing what this mat does and therefore like the cartridge man isolator mentioned in newsletter 7 it merits a special recommendation. Some mats work well on some decks and not on others - this does not seem to be the case with this mat as it manages to deliver the goods on all decks tried so far. Decks tend to fall into 2 camps, those with metal platters and those with glass / acrylic or similar. Only a very few mats manage to upgrade both decks successfully but the sound deadened steel mat is definitely one of them and at £79 is a bit of a no brainer for delivering a cost effective upgrade.

We have added a tweek of our own to this mat that further improves it's performance and is included on all mats we supply - the tweek is removable just in case you want to compare the standard version with the upgraded one.
