Introduction to High Performance plugs and sockets
Plugs seem an unlikely area for significant sound quality improvements but are nevertheless a worthwhile item to get right. They are capable of making differences that cannot be achieved elsewhere.
As with cables, plugs have a tonal balance so it is helpful to have a neutral system – as a rule the more metal there is in the plug, the weightier and thicker the sound becomes.
Most phono plugs are made from brass which is 4 times more resistive than copper. The reasons that this is bad news is beyond the scope of this short article but for simplicity, the interruption of proper signal flow is significant – a bit like traffic coming up to a roundabout. For this reason specialist companies produce copper or Silver plugs which are expensive to manufacture and entail higher prices. The differences are surprisingly high and make this a well worthwhile upgrade.
