Not Just a Collector’s item.

This may annoy you. It’s either well-trodden ground or simply tone-deaf; after all, does a case for vinyl need to be made when it’s currently the highest-grossing format on the market?

But this is not a case for vinyl as physical media, which is burdened with tropes about tactility, collectability, and offline sentiment. As great as those things are, this is a case for vinyl’s superiority with respect to its transients, and that is probably what will annoy vinyl critics the most.

So, apologies for what is to ensue as I hitch up my waders and get into the longest-running debate in audiophile history: analogue vs digital.

Coming to Terms

If you’ve described vinyl’s appeal as “warmth,” you may have fallen into a common trap. Media often uses “warmth” as a catch-all explanation for vinyl’s resurgence. It hints at a difference between analogue and digital without explaining what that difference really is.

That’s understandable. Most people rarely experience a decent vinyl system, let alone compare it directly to digital.

Can we expect casual observers of the vinyl revival to dig deeper? “Warmth” is valid, but it’s only the surface. In my view, it’s not even the most important or convincing factor, since it’s often poo-pooed by vinyl critics as distortion.

Despite booming sales, many buyers still need convincing to actually play the records they purchase. If we want analogue to thrive long-term, we need to explain vinyl’s benefits more clearly and precisely. So let’s talk about the crucial term here: Transients.

Transients

This case is about transients. There are many other aspects of sound to be claimed by the digital or vinyl camps. But when it comes to transients, I am firmly planting the flag in the analogue territories.

To qualify, this isn’t about whether you can digitally model an analogue signal and its transients. You can. But perfect computer modelling and real-world playback are different things. So Shannon and Nyquist be damned, this is an argument that analogue creates an audio signal more efficiently, with less corruption, resulting in audible differences in transients.

For those new to the game, a transient is a short-duration, high-amplitude burst of energy occurring at the very beginning of a sound waveform. It represents the initial “impact” or attack—such as a drum hit, guitar pick, or vocal consonant—before the sound settles into its sustained phase. Transients are crucial for perceived punch, definition, and rhythm, but a lot more on that to come..

When Vinyl Sounds Better.

Walking around Hi-Fi shows, visiting dealerships, and in my own system (and friends’), one difference always stands out between analogue and digital: analogue’s superior soundstaging.

Soundstaging is how the various elements of the music present themselves in a 3-dimensional space. We use the terms ‘sound stage’, ‘stereo image’, or ‘imaging’ to refer to the sonic presentation of height, width, and depth, and the position of sounds in that space.

Vinyl systems deliver a greater sense of 3-dimensionality, especially in the depth of different elements of the sound, while digital presentations are closer to a 2-dimensional left-to-right pan. This stems from how transients are handled.

Digital lovers, why trust me, a chip in the game vinyl evangelist? Hear the argument from your own side:

In a 2024 Munich High End interview with John Darko, Chord Electronics digital consultant Rob Watts said of his M Scaler products:

“The big problem with digital is the timing of transients”

Now, to begin to understand what Watts is saying here, we first need to understand exactly what transients are.

What are Transients?

Transients refer to the initial rise and peak of a sound wave. This is the sound of the strike of a cymbal before the note sustains and decays. These are the consonants or emphasised vowels in the words of a vocal.

These are even the enunciated parts of a word that make it make sense. “I’ve got you under my skin” without its transients would sound something like: “i’e oh oo uner ay ih”. The sound no longer makes sense; everything is slurred and can’t convey the line’s meaning.

In the same sense, a drum snare would no longer sound like a snare, or a guitar like a guitar, maybe uncanny psychedelic ones at best. And uncanny is a good term here, because without the transients, the phrase is unable to sound natural or real.

All music has transients, so even Aphex Twin’s otherworldly ambient techno masterpiece ‘Selected Ambient Works 85-92’ would lose its airiness, its sense of beat, texture, and space without some level of transients during playback.

In a stereo mix, several instruments and or vocals are combined, each delivering their own transients that rise and peak in the music. But transient’s dont just control attack, and don’t just make things sound accurate, they also control the space and time of the soundstage. Watts explains this well:

“Transients are used by the brain so that we can perceive instruments as separate entities, locating those instruments in space, the timbre and pitch.”

So transients control our understanding and recognition of different words, and notes delivered by voices and instruments. As part of a waveform travelling at different speeds and amplitudes, they also control how we perceive space in the music, as well as any sense of timing, and the dynamic range.

How This Relates to Hi-Fi

The speed, efficiency, and control with which the playback system creates and delivers transients determine how you experience the dimensionality of your music.

Personally, I’m more engaged when things sound more three-dimensional, “In the room” and expansive in all directions.

The Problem with Digtial Transients

Watts assesses digital audio with refreshing, if not brutal, honesty:

“The big problem with the current digital is the timing of transients, and when you put the digital signal into an interpolation filter, and every single DAC on the planet has got an interpolation filter, the timing of transients is all wrong. They’re shifting backwards and forwards continuously, and this shifting backwards and forwards of the timing of transients confuses the brain, and as a result, your instruments lack separation, you don’t get timbre variation, and you can’t locate instruments in space’

Watt’s is revealing all of this of course, because the Quintet M Scaler is his, and Chord Electronics solution to this problem. But taking that aside, one of the keys to the argument for vinyl was in his next answer in the Darko interview. John asks Rob: Why is the Quintet able to do this and not the Dave? (the model below) Watts replies that the reason the Quintet can deliver improved transients is:

“Simply because of the amount of processing power. The more processing power you’ve got delivers much better sound quality because you can more accurately reconstruct the timing of transients. If you wanted to perfectly reconstruct the original timing, you would need an infinite amount of processing.”

Watts goes on to say that the algorithm used to reconstruct perfect transients is more important even than the infinite processing power required. The total development time for the proprietary coding in the Quartet took 6 years of development.

With digital, better transients are beginning to be delivered by using large amounts of power to process the digital source through an extremely complicated algorithm to enhance the digital signal. Watts’ endeavour is remarkable, innovative, and to be applauded.

The Case for Vinyl

Vinyl contrasts sharply: no conversion needed. No DAC, no interpolation filter, no timing corruption from digital processing.

Digital requires huge amounts of electricity for that processing. Here’s something we can all agree on: Mains power is noisy, so designers obsess over power supplies to reduce interference that blurs transients. It only takes a bit of time spent with an oscilloscope to see the evidence for yourself. Even batteries carry inherent noise.

Vinyl’s signal? Mechanically generated at full resolution. No electrical power required to create it

Digital playback takes electricity; vinyl playback makes electricity.

Your Cartridge Generates Brand New Electricity.

The cantilever attached to your stylus moves a magnet in coils (MM) or coils in magnets (MC), inducing current via electromagnetic induction. The cartridge is a tiny generator creating fresh electrical signal—left and right channels—without any prior power input.

Only after the tonearm wires does the signal hit its first electrical stage: the phono stage’s RIAA EQ, done with simple analogue electronics. No digital-to-analogue conversion, no upsampling, no special transient processing.

The cartridge is a transducer: mechanical energy → electrical energy. The tonearm has no power supply, no mains dependence. It delivers a raw analogue waveform.

Vinyl needs negligible power for EQ in the phono stage—but nothing to “enhance” or correct transients. Good analogue playback lets transients flow untampered from the source.

Interference with the source in vinyl systems is mostly mechanical (hence the need for premium gear), not electrical mains noise.

This is why good analogue playback is able to deliver such effective transients. In contrast to the slightly confused transients that Watts describes as endemic to basically all DACs on the market, the analogue signal delivers transients untampered straight from the source material. There is essentially no electrical interference of the kind faced by the rest of the mains taking system.

Sound of the police

I’m sure the measurements police will be after me for this one, with some kind of number that points to digital superiority. What’s more, I have no measurable data to provide you with. I can only point to the facts regarding electricity, and talk about the subjective experience I have after decades of being raised in the industry, of experiences in our listening room comparing CD to vinyl, streaming to Vinyl, and high-res to Vinyl.

I hear the same thing at every Hi-Fi Show I go to yearly in my job role, and every dealership I’ve visited who have been willing to make the comparison. For the digital crowd, this is unlikely to be enough. You’ll likely think I have probably developed some kind of Stockholm Syndrome, having been indoctrinated into vinyl from birth.

I’ll point out again that Rob Watts himself is the one pointing to a weakness in digital. Weakness in contrast to what? In contrast to an analogue signal. Without an analogue signal, we probably wouldn’t even know that depth could be such a sublime part of stereo playback, or just how good separation and soundstaging can get. And it’s not just Watts either. There are many developers in the industry who unexpectedly favour analogue, but wouldn’t make such comments on the record.

Rob Watts makes the case that more attention needs to be directed to the handling of the waveform itself for advancements in digital, rather than resting on the laurels of measurable figures (that may be quite irrelevant to an analogue signal). We listen to sound waves, not numbers. Every employed speaker designer will tell you that numbers always supplement listening. Be brave enough to listen with your ears and consider what a real musician, band, or orchestra in 3-dimensional space would sound like. If you need a reference point, heck, maybe get out of the listening room and attend a concert.

Not all vinyl beats digital. A Crosley is enough to dispel that idea. And this isn’t the case to say only listen to vinyl. There’s fantastic music only available digitally, and there’s fantastic music only on vinyl. Some of my favourite music is poorly mastered and pressed to vinyl. Some of the music I discover listening digitally sounds far better on vinyl.

Nor is it the case that even all high-end vinyl playback sounds better than digital. Some eyewateringly expensive vinyl systems had some of the driest sounds I heard at Munich last year, and I promise you it wasn’t down to room treatment. But even in those cases, the delivery of the transients still had that signature separation and 3-dimensionality that lies squarely in the ownership of vinyl. Better vinyl systems at the Munich show presented listeners not only with the transients we’ve discussed, but also rich tonal quality and pinpoint timing. The ‘just right’ that vinyl-loving Oldilocks would recognise, and newcomers are trying to understand.

Older readers please take that as a compliment. At 30 almost everyone in the Hi-Fi industry is older than me. It takes the openness of a Rob Watts for me to articulate what I hear in a vinyl system compared to a digital one, to begin to understand what transients are, and to think it through.

If there’s one takeaway from this, let’s be more open-handed with our knowledge. Many older Hi-Fi aficionados have helped me to understand our terms and concepts in Hi-Fi, in its design and its playback. Conversations that clearly explain what Hi-Fi terminology means help to draw attention to what is happening when we listen. That is crucial for my generation’s understanding of the industry, and equally so, its ability to thrive for years to come.

Thanks for reading.

And then you upgrade to a Linn and then you think well uh it’s kind of better. But it’s much less better than I expected and maybe it’s not such a good album after all in terms of recording. And then you get to something like this. Which is, you know, a very expensive high-end arm and cartridge and turntable, and then suddenly it just unpeels, doesn’t it, it just opens up. The overall result is that you get incredibly detailed sound, but it’s not a detailed sound in a kind of forensic way or a kind of Hi-Fi way; it’s very organic.”

It’s 18 Grand and it’s an amazing turntable. It weighs about 60 kilograms. When we tested it for Hi-Fi News three or four years ago it was the best measuring turntable Paul Miller had ever measured. Incredible speed stability, really architectural sound, loads of detail Etc. But I think the Technics is slightly less musical, it’s less kind of natural and organic sounding. They’re both fantastic decks you know it’s kind of Ferrari or Lamborghini, and you know we’ve talked about this quite often. If you get the opportunity to, you know compare these products. If you’re in that market I think you have to try to do that. It’s been an absolute privilege being able to listen to this lovely turntable, tonearm and cartridge set up through your system here with the Kerr Acoustics. That’s been brilliant, but if you are in this market then you’ve got a short list this turntable.”

A few of our customers have had the chance to compare the two, both reporting a ‘clinical’ sound from the Technics, and deciding to opt for the Sovereign turntable after hearing its separated, open performance, and that natural, organic sound that David and Mike rave about in their discussion on the turntable.

Among the Mk5 upgrades announced at the Bristol Hi-Fi show came the news that a new turntable would be entering the range.

On top of the motor/power supply redesign, one of the major upgrades in the Origin Live Mk5 line is the Multi-Layer Platter (MLP); trickle-down tech from their flagship Voyager turntable, now incorporated as standard on all turntables above the Aurora. The Swift is essentially an Aurora turntable with a Multi-Layer Platter. Why include the MLP as standard? Because it sounds too good to simply be an optional extra, says Mark Baker our company’s founder.

“We were often saying to customers that this platter upgrade takes an Aurora up to the performance level of a Calypso, and the Calypso to that of a Resolution and so on. To keep the range as accessible as possible Origin Live have filled in the price point between the Aurora and the Calypso comes the Swift.

The Swift features the basic design of the Aurora turntable, with its cantilevered design. The platter and tonearm are balanced in equilibrium on a high mass sub-chassis plate. Something that equates roughly to a rigid, mechanical suspension. Origin Live claim this not only avoids both the softening of leading edges often found in suspended designs and the hardness in many non-suspended designs.

It also features their low friction bearing, which the company report now consistently takes at least 2:30 minutes to come to stop from 33rpm when belt less.

Combined with another composite layer underneath and carefully screwed on to the acrylic platter (not too tight we are told) the multiple layers work to diffuse surface resonance through vibrational interference. Having spent countless hours laser cutting hundreds of different line profiles to test on the top layer, the Bakers at Origin Live also opted for a label sized hole at the centre of the platter which they claim has added Bass detail and depth.

In April of this year, What Hi-Fi revealed the 16 best turntables they’ve ever heard in their listening rooms. As a result, they gave Sovereign turntable a well-earned place on that list. But to What Hi-Fi’s credit, they had little incentive to put the sovereign on that list. We haven’t reviewed or advertised with them in over a decade. Further to their credit, they didn’t even tell us! It was only by chance that we found this article while looking through reviews of the Sovereign.

“This vinyl player has effortless composure and gives tremendous insight into the emotion in a record’s original recording, revealing little details we hadn’t noticed even in some of our personal favourites.”

It’s certainly time to send them the latest & greatest Sovereign-S with its new, improved multi-layer platter. As a result, this incredible verdict could only get better.

A lot has changed in the 17 years since this review. Most importantly, the unbeatable sound of the Sovereign has only improved. But many of you who have traded in your turntable for the latest version will already know this. For those of you who haven’t yet done so, recent developments in the platter have pushed our turntables miles ahead of their previous versions. Above all, we would encourage you to get in touch and make the most of our trade-in offers.

If you are interested in good sound quality, this article aspires to help. My thanks must go to the outside assistance given by four professional designers and reviewers who have contributed and proof read the ideas included. This was necessary in a subject which can be confusing for a number of reasons which will become clear as you read.

At face value, good sound quality seems like an easy thing to evaluate. We say things such as:

“I know what I like”

“My system sounds great”

“This item got a great review on sound quality”

“It’s either right or it’s wrong”

Most people want a system which gives you the feeling of “being there” at the original performance – of hearing the singers and instruments as if they were right there in the room in front of you. In the process of both hearing and conducting many equipment auditions I have found that what seems simple is far from it!

Origin Live has won around twenty “product of the year” awards for their designs. This article seeks to pass on and distill over three decades of professional listening experience into easy to understand concepts:

Things to watch out for when evaluating sound quality

Knowing how people listen differently

How to figure out your priorities in sound quality

How reviews and recommendations may come from particular standpoints

I often discuss with clients how they wish to upgrade the equipment in their audio system. Many have great systems which they are happy with but are also aware that they have heard better. This leads to interesting conversations involving the pros and cons of various options. One of the most common difficulties expressed is that the range of choice is massive and pretty much everything is recommended by one source or another.

There are many stories of clients trying different items of equipment in an effort to address a particular shortcoming in sound quality. For example in a search for more detail in the sound, you may have purchased a pair of speakers, thinking they had great clarity in the audition. However, after a while you recognise that there is no bass warmth and listening becomes a fatiguing experience – tonally these speakers have too much treble. So you duly acquire another pair of speakers without such an “insightful” treble – these are OK for a while but eventually you notice that the sound is not very exciting or involving. If truth be told, it’s boring because the dynamics are poor! This story is the syndrome of swapping one set of problems for another. All part of the learning curve in achieving good sound quality. Whilst this may be fun for some, it is often too expensive and time consuming for others.

You can usually recognize good sound quality instantly. However it’s prudent to go further than initial impressions as there are many common pitfalls which need to be avoided. If you are relatively new to Hi Fi you may find it challenging to describe in detail what you are hearing. It’s like learning about computers or smartphones – flashy looking products can have underlying issues, and there are unfamiliar words and ways of describing the things which are not always consistent.

Why You Need to Evaluate Products to Your Own Satisfaction

Businesses are told by skilful marketing companies that it’s not about the product, it’s about the marketing! There is a lot of truth in this. Just because something is popular and marketed well does not mean it’s the best product out there. Putting claims to the test yourself through audition is the only way of knowing whether something really lives up to the hype. Opportunities to audition equipment may occur at a dealer, hearing a friend’s system, Hi Fi shows or products ordered on a money back guarantee. When these opportunities occur, it is extremely helpful to be on the lookout for key aspects of sound quality and know why they are important.

Remarks on listening to Hi FI

I used to think that unless someone had severe hearing loss, most people had similar hearing. I put down variations in the way people respond in listening tests as a matter of experience. When new to Hi Fi, I myself used to find comparison tests of different systems quite demanding in terms of always understanding people’s comments. This was usually because I was particularly focused on one aspect of the music. Over time I have learned to tune in to things in a more holistic way rather than just being focused on certain aspects of the music.

Hearing varies from person to person in the same way that some have 20/20 vision, others are short sighted, others long sighted etc. It’s estimated that only 1 in 10,000 people have absolute pitch perfect hearing (meaning you can tell what key is played without a reference note). More commonly 1 in 50 have relative pitch perfect hearing (meaning you can tell whate
ver key is played relative to a reference Key played). 1 in 50 are tone deaf so everyone else is somewhere on the spectrum in between.

These facts tell you that designers, reviewers and listeners vary in their ability to hear tonal correctness. Some will pay a lot of attention to tonal quality and others will value different characteristics. Technical measurements are of value but have limitations when assessing sound quality for reasons that have been well documented over the years.

People have differing preferences in what they like to hear in music. If you are not used to hearing live music (un-amplified), you might not be so aware of how things should sound. It’s then easy to simply accept mediocre sound quality. We quickly get used to the sound of our system without realising how much it can be improved. When you listen to a piece of familiar music on a different system, it can often shed a different light on things. It takes time, experience, and critical listening to improve how you identify what makes good sound. Reading reviews or listening to sales people doesn’t guarantee you will end up with the best solutions.

I for one, have made many seriously poor buying decisions by listening to the enthusiastic opinion of others before listening for myself. So when reading reviews or listening to recommendations it helps to have a charted map of what great sound quality really consists of.

Three Main Categories in Good Sound Quality

At Origin Live we find that the elements which make up good sound quality mostly fall into 3 core categories: Clarity, Dynamics and Tonality. What follows is not necessarily the most perfect way of looking at things but it helps to simplify and clarify a complex subject.

<div class="fusion-title title fusion-title-26 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-one fusion-title-default-margin" style="margin-right:0px;margin-left:0px;
It is surprising how you can demonstrate 2 systems to a room full of listeners and there will be different opinions as to which is best. You can then carry out a similar demonstration between 2 other systems and the room will be unanimous on the winner.

The most likely reason for this is that in the first instance, one system appealed only to listeners with a given preference for clarity (by way of example) whereas in the unanimous verdict, one system appealed to all types of listener. This can be illustrated in the diagram below where you can see the sweet spot of truly good sound quality.

“Best Sound” which finds Universal Acceptance

An evaluation of good sound quality will not only look at individual aspects in the music but also appreciate things holistically.

One way to do this is to score the above diagram. The intersection of the 3 circles in area CDT represents the overall score. The perfect sound is one which would score 100% in all three categories. The score at intersection “CDT” would be averaged to 100% [100C + 100D + 100T]/3 = 100%. Where C is Clarity, D is Dynamics & T is Tonality

The value of seeing the individual scores 100C 100D 100T – is that you may have a particular preference for clarity (for example), and not care too much about tonality. So if the score was [100C + 100D + 30T] / 3 = 77% you would be happy and the system may come at much less cost.

Of course no such scoring system has been formalised but it gives a concept of how reviews on good sound quality could score things to arrive at their conclusions.

It is interesting to note that the quality of Clarity/ Dynamics/Tonality can be enhanced or diminished by every component in your system – from source to loudspeakers.

In 35 years carrying out listening tests, hearing demonstrations, giving demonstrations and sitting on professional blind test listening panels, it’s very clear that an understanding of what people like and why, is of supreme importance. This understanding helps avoid a myriad of pitfalls which may occur in:-

Design. Evaluation, Reviews, Your Choices etc.

Observations on Preferences

Everybody, even reviewers focus on different things when listening to music. Just as people prefer different genres of music, so we have particular preferences on aspects of what we consider to be good sound quality. Different aspects of sound draw different people in.

A parallel to what people like in good sound quality, is the type of books or films people like. Genres such as thriller, detective, romantic etc, all have their equivalents in music and equipment sound. Some people are more analytic in their listening and looking for the fine details in playback. Others are looking for the thrill you get with quality dynamics. Some most enjoy great tonality and the pleasing effect on the ear of wonderful harmonics in the music. The all round listener will latch onto all three of these while listening to music.

If you are not particularly sensitive to tonality, you will probably pay a lot more attention to things like dynamics or clarity. If on the other hand, you are sensitive to pitch and harmonics (e.g like a musician) then you may find tonal anomalies extremely irritating and will not rate equipment which is poor tonally. Tonal anomalies can include things like singers sounding flat, piano harmonics sounding unnatural etc. Knowing what you like in good sound quality is an important key to making the best equipment choices.

Magazine reviews are often very helpful in shortlisting products for audition as they often discuss sound quality in depth. However it’s worth recognising the following:

A huge number of products all receive the same rating (number of stars or % score etc)

Scoring systems don’t rate absolute performance of products. For example a £200 product will get 5 stars which means that it’s good in it’s class. What this score does not tell you, is how it compares to a £1000 product. The truth is that there are products which outperform others at over 10 times the price.

It’s natural that any review will be coloured by the reviewers hearing and personal tastes. Ignoring the overall rating, good reviews still give a picture of a product’s characteristics which helps.

Comparison Tests: How They Work and How to Get Them Right

You may not think volume to be the most exciting subject to read about. However an incomplete knowledge of this aspect has led to countless errors in judgement. It is one explanation for people who say “I can’t hear any difference” when auditioning a product. Conversely there are those who hear differences but make flawed choices due to volume related issues.

In conducting auditions with our clients it is unsurprising that we encounter many different preferred listening levels. Some cannot play at loud volumes due to being in a flat or semi-detached house with neighbours nearby. Others have no such constraints.

The inference here is that most of the time you get used to listening to your equipment at a certain volume, and this has more effect on your equipment choices and perceptions than you may think.

Comparison Tests

When you’re deciding what Hi-Fi equipment you’re going to add to your system, it’s likely that you’ll want to audition, and compare different pieces of equipment.

My first experience of this process showed me how easy it is to get comparison tests wrong but also proved to be a huge learning experience:

Comparing Differences & Evaluation of Small Changes

When you’re deciding what Hi-Fi equipment you’re going to add to your system, it’s likely that you’ll want to audition, and even compare different pieces of equipment.

My first experience of this process showed me how easy it is to get comparison tests wrong but also proved to be a huge learning experience:

Over 30 years ago as a young Hi Fi enthusiast I was bitten by the Hi Fi bug and wished to upgrade my speakers. I had a nice pair of Acoustic Research speakers at the time and spotted a pair of 2nd hand kit speakers advertised in the local paper. These promised outstanding sound at an amazingly low price. I was invited to try these with the option to return them within 2 days for a refund.

I duly compared both speakers and preferred the kit speakers but there was something niggling at the back of my mind that I may not be making the right decision. I noticed that the kit speakers were ever so slightly louder than the A&Rs. Being a novice at the time I had not compensated for the fact that the kit speakers in question were slightly more efficient, therefore played a bit louder. After all, I thought, why should this make a difference anyway?

Out of curiosity, I made sure that I listened to both speakers at exactly the same volume by adjusting the volume between comparisons. This time my preference was reversed and the A&Rs came out best.

When you compare 2 products with slight differences in sound quality, the volume level must be absolutely the same if you are to avoid errors in judgement (unless you use the trick referred to later on).

How Comparison Tests work

If you are auditioning 2 products, and the volume levels are peaking at less than 90dB, you won’t be able to notice some potentially big problems. Our ears always tend to prefer anything that sounds ‘louder’ until the volume is peaking around 90dB (unweighted). In a product A vs product B demonstration it is much harder to judge the sound quality when one product is being played at a lower volume than another. Sometimes dealers play their favoured product at a slightly higher volume to steer clients towards what they want them to choose.

It is also of primary importance to realize that resonance and artifacts in equipment increase loudness. If this is not realized it can easily lead to errors of judgement. For example a vinyl record resonates as it is played – this adds to the volume of the music ever so slightly. If you eliminate some of this resonance by the addition of a record weight, the volume will be reduced ever so slightly and IF you are playing at lowish volume you will think the sound is worse because at these levels the ear says “louder is better”.

One problem of conducting listening tests at lower levels is that it’s almost impossible to match volumes between listening tests because they are so slight.

How To Compare

90dB is the great equaliser. This is the solution which ultimately eliminates the ear’s bias towards a louder sound. Try to carry out comparisons at much louder levels (peaking at around 90dB) for short periods of up to 30 seconds on the same portion of a music track. At these levels the ear is getting all the information it needs and is no longer craving “louder”.

There are a number of observations related to listening at louder levels:

Firstly you can detect differences much more easily and hear things you simply do not notice at lower listening levels.

In audition, the differences between products can be perceived as massive at higher listening levels.

Conversely at extremely low volumes, even a transistor radio can sound similar to a high end system.

If you listen at lowish volume, you might be tempted to ask yourself ‘if you can only hear small differences at high volume levels, does it really matter?”. I would suggest that it does matter because many small differences eventually add up to a significant improvement which is clearly audible at lower volumes.

Conclusions

The seriousness of misjudgements due to volume differences are hard to appreciate and often not recognised.

In comparing relatively small sonic differences, volume is critical. If it’s not approaching the 90dB region you will naturally prefer the slightly louder sound because of the ear’s bias.

Louder sound can easily be due to excessive resonance, artifacts, distortion and other nasties hence you can be misled. Once the volume is peaking at around 90db these are more likely to present themselves as problems in comparison with a clean system.

If you could adjust volumes to be absolutely identical between comparisons, then resonance would have no advantage and you would judge differences correctly. However because the ear is so sensitive, the volume change necessary is so small that this idea is unrealistic.

For reliable comparison tests listen to the same short passage of music for short periods of around 30 seconds with the sound level peaking instantaneously at around 90dB.

Part 2

Why Volume Matters: Time, Tone and Metering

The Equipment You Chooses Depends on Volume

Loss of Sensitivity at High Volumes

Listening to music at high volumes for too long can also be a big problem. If you listen to music at over 85dB for over 2 hours, it’s likely that your ears will lose their sensitivity to treble. When you’re making a comparison between equipment it’s very important that you’re aware of this phenomenon, or you may end up choosing equipment based on a bright overstated treble.

I became aware of this problem 30 years ago when I would spend up to 4 hours in listening tests to develop products. The next morning I would listen to the changes I had made and wonder how I could have ever tolerated such a bright overpowered treble. This effect can be a contributing factor in overly bright designs where those involved are unaware of the subtleties of subjective listening tests.

This loss of sensitivity should only be temporary providing your listening levels are within health and safety guidelines. If you compare equipment in audition, whether alone or with others, it often helps to listen to a short portion of music at loud levels for periods of around 30 seconds, and keep the duration of your listening to a maximum of 2 hours.

Measuring Decibels

For as little as £12.50 you can buy a sound level meter to help you assess the volume of your system. More expensive meters will be more accurate with more definition given through fast/slow time weighted readings. The time weighted facility is worth having as it gives you a better idea of the instantaneous volume levels that you’re hearing, rather than an average (weighted) volume over time.

There are free sound level metering apps that you can download on your mobile phone. These apps are best avoided. They are often very inaccurate, and can vary ±10dB or worse from a correct reading. If an app was specifically designed for your particular phone’s microphone or if you could calibrate it using a decent sound level meter to within 1.5dB then it can function well for most purposes.

If you are unfamiliar with the way the dB scale works then all you really need to know is that volume doubles for every additional 6dB. For example a 12dB increase represents 4 times the original volume.

Once you can measure decibels properly, you can compare equipment more easily. This should eliminate the basic preference that the ear has towards the louder sound.

Your Equipment Choices can Depend on Volume

It may be surprising, but the volume you listen to music at is likely to affect your choice of speakers. If you tend to listen to your system at a low volume your ideal speaker choice will almost certainly be different than if you listened at significantly louder levels. Generally speaking, small speakers tend to produce greater clarity and speed than their larger rivals. As you increase the volume however, this advantage disappears. At higher volumes the smaller speaker cones encounter breakup and neither can they move enough air to produce proper bass dynamics at higher volumes.

Most reviewers, dealers and manufacturers will tell you that there is an ideal playing volume for most speakers. This is true. The ideal playing volume will be higher or lower depending on the design of the speaker. Take time to find out what this volume is to listen to the speaker at its best.

Tonal Balance Changes With Volume

Because of the way that the ear works, our perception of tonal balance changes with volume. When you listen to music at a low volume, there is less bass relative to midband and treble. However as you increase the volume, the ear notices the bass becoming proportionally louder and more prominent relative to other frequencies.

Some amplifiers have a “bass boost” button you can use to compensate for bass loss at low volume listening. This is a worthwhile idea but the implementation is tricky due to different loudspeaker efficiencies, so most amplifiers ignore it.

Conclusions

Use an accurate sound level meter and avoid mobile phone apps unless calibrated.

Be aware that your ears experience a loss of treble sensitivity in an extended period of loud listening levels.

There is an ideal volume for every speaker to sound it’s best.

Your perception of correct tonal balance changes with volume.

Lastly look after your ears – there are guidelines published on how to avoid hearing loss. Government health and safety guidelines are a good place to start. Always bear in mind that the “fast / slow “ setting on your sound meter makes a lot of difference to your readings.

The story went like this “I was impressed for the first half-hour, the sound was so clean and I thought I was onto something. After half an hour, I don’t know why, but the music just became boring and clinical – it just didn’t sound like real music.”

There are a number of explanations for this syndrome. One probable reason has to do with something often ignored or misundertood – Harmonics – these are so influential on music and also highly complex.

For example, my son recently wanted to upgrade his violin. The violin specialist related that the sound produced by a good violin will carry all the way to the back of a large concert hall whereas an inferior violin is absolutely incapable of such a feat.

The explanation given was that the overtones (harmonics) of the better violin interact with the primary notes to propagate them better through air. It’s a bit like sprinting – your legs do all the carrying but try not swinging your arms or swinging them in the opposite direction to normal. Harmonics may well be what arm swinging is to running. This is obviously a simplistic illustration but should give pause for thought.

If harmonics help sound waves travel in the air, it’s not much of a stretch to surmise that they affect electrical waves travelling in wires. Normally the sonic differences between wires are explained in terms of skin effect (the tendency for the current to flow down the outside of the wire) but this is doubtful as it only occurs at very high frequencies outside the audio bandwidth (intermodulation effects, in this case, are of a very low order).

Other explanations of sonic differences in cables include the fact that the impedance value (resistance) of any wire varies at different frequencies. This means it handles low frequencies differently from high frequencies. This is certainly true but not the whole story.

How do you think of electrical energy travel?

Harmonics within the signal create complexity that will be handled better by some wires than others. To think of electricity as the simple flow of electrons down a wire is a huge mistake. Electrical energy flows at approximately 1/3rd the speed of light in copper. However there are serious theories that electrons do not actually flow at all – others say they move at about 4 miles per hour.

The flow of electricity is more like an electromagnetic pulse wave than the flow of electrons from A to B. Once you start thinking in terms of electromagnetic waves, it’s easy to see why harmonics play such an important role. Either way, there are aspects of the sonic signature of different wires that fall well outside layman explanations.

Sonic Signatures in materials and structures

Everything in Hi-Fi is affected by good harmonics, poor harmonics or lack of them. Harmonics are either helped or hindered by the design of a cable due to electromagnetic field interaction within the current carrier. The same principle applies to the mechanical vibration of components. You want to eliminate false harmonics (harmonic distortion) but keep the original harmonics of the music intact. Harmonics explain many of the puzzling aspects of why materials have a sonic signature.

Switching the conversation back to electrical harmonics – Why does Silver wire usually have such an open, clean sound, with brilliantly lit upper mid-band and treble but seldom goes deep in the bass? Some have suggested that this has nothing to do with its 1.05 times better conduction, but much more to do with its grain structure and electromagnetic characteristics.

Close to our sense of smell, music has the strongest power to evoke mood changes and bring back memories. We have all had the experience of hearing a song we loved in our youth. Immediately, we may think of a first love, a holiday or special event, friends we knew and experiences we haven’t remembered in years.

Listening to music actually causes the brain to release dopamine, the “feel good” hormone that restores logic and enables us to focus and concentrate. This can literally change your life. For example upbeat, high tempo songs raise energy levels if you feel lethargic. Classical music or jazz will often help you unwind properly after a busy day. It is interesting that when Dame Kelly Holmes won Olympic gold in the 800m and 1500m, she had a theme song in her head for the training and events. Where would films be without music to capture the mood so much better?

Why have great sound quality?

The actual quality of sound reproduction can have a very strong influence on our enjoyment of music. Why is this though? Surely if you can identify the song it’s good enough? Ultimately the answer to this lies in defining what exactly is “better” sound quality? To be clear about this, leads to understanding the issues and making correct choices.

What is Great sound quality?

The ear and brain enjoy particular aspects of music. The order of priority is different from person to person but all of the following are present in a great system.

Dynamics: The ability to reproduce the full energy of a note without loss of impact. Loss of dynamics are usually manifested by an artificial softening of bass notes, lack of speed, blurred treble etc. The sound is essentially dull and boring in comparison with a dynamic sound. Dynamics are akin to the acceleration and braking performance of a car. You should put a big flag on the fact that measurements of dynamics are never included in loudspeaker specifications! This is not to be confused with dynamic range which simply states the range of frequencies that a speaker produces. Neither are efficiency / sensitivity figures a proper measure of dynamics.

Timing / musicality: Live music is coherent, liquid and integrated – For example, the bass does not lag behind due to sluggish speed or overhang.

Tonal balance: Too much treble emphasis soon causes listening fatigue. Conversely a bass oriented sound will become heavy and oppressive.

Separation / clarity / definition / transparency: This creates interest as it enables you to “see” into the mix and latch onto each individual strand of the music, whether it be vocals, drum beat, keyboard etc.

Natural Sound: The ear does not like distortion introduced by resonance, electronics or phase issues.

Freedom from Coloration: Cabinet resonance, cone breakup and ringing are often present in loudspeakers. These are a bit like artificial additives in food and detract from music by causing distraction, usually at a subliminal level but there nonetheless.

Ability to create an “out of the box” 3 dimensional sound image: This is really a result of good definition and tonal balance because if these are present you are halfway there, but imaging is also related to cabinet shape and driver dispersion.

Because the brain knows what it likes and expects to hear from music, it is constantly “filling in the gaps” for reality. In other words it imagines it is hearing the real thing. This is a form of “error correction” that is going on all the time. Visual cues sometimes make this easier. For example one of our staff was at an exhibition and noticed that watching a video of a singer and band as it was played through a reasonable system made the effect much more real. As soon as he closed his eyes the flaws of the music reproduction were immediately apparent. Closing your eyes is not something we recommend but the point here is that the brain fills in for reality.

There is one caveat here and it is a big one. The error correction process that goes on, is work for the brain that it prefers not to do. Eventually it gets tired and your level of enjoyment does not last anywhere near as long as it would with a better system.

Next article we will look at the challenges that must be overcome in order to progress the art of speaker performance.

I would like to start by saying that 25 years ago, I personally knew an excellent audio reviewer by the name of Peter Turner, who was still reviewing at the age of 80! In case you are wondering if his reviews were reliable, I can say that he would sometimes go round to a much younger friend’s house to get a second opinion. I was with him on one of these occasions and can report that his hearing was as sharp as a pin – we had little to add to his observations during this equipment audition.

A few other factual stories are worth relating before drawing a few conclusions.

On radio 2, there was a phone in discussion regarding the rights and wrongs of 20kHz sirens installed outside city centre bars, to disperse young teenagers. Most adults hear up to 18kHz and are not supposed to be affected by this, whereas the under 15s should find it deafening. The surprising thing was, that there were 40 year old women phoning in to say how painful they found these sirens. This indicates very strongly that they probably retain hearing at 20Khz simply because they have not exposed themselves to much noise.

One of my friends was a sniper in Iraq. At age 23, he experienced severe hearing loss from the regular firing of a rifle with it’s very high impulse levels of sound.

A silver medallist swimmer who was also a real audio enthusiast, related to me that his hearing had been knocked down to around 10 kHz from the constant high frequency noise of rushing water past his ears in the pool. Although he was unable to hear top end detail, he was still able to appreciate even the smallest improvement to his Hi Fi, especially in the bass as this part of his hearing was relatively unaffected.

The star drummer at the opening ceremony of the London Olympics was deaf from birth, and simply “feels” the music from vibration.

Lastly there was a concern a while ago that older orchestra conductors might not be as good as younger ones due to hearing loss. Bear in mind that orchestra conductors suffer hearing loss from standing in front of very high dynamic sound levels. So a test was conducted – It was found that the more experienced older conductors were able to point out things that the younger ones did not pick up. This is explained by the very important way, in which note frequencies and harmonics interact with all the other frequencies (called inter-modulation effects).

The brain is incredibly adapt at interpreting these inter-modulation effects. So although your ear may not hear high frequencies directly (because of hearing loss), the brain interprets the inter-modulation effects to “hear” higher notes which the ear is not physically hearing. The BBC studied this phenomenon and gave the example that even on a phone which only produces sound above say 500Hz, the brain still can identify a deep voice and is “hearing” the voice as producing notes down to say 200 Hz or less. This is the same phenomenon that can trick the brain into thinking small speakers are producing deep bass when they are not.

From these stories, the following suggestions can be made:

Hearing is the last sense to go and remains better than we may think, right up to the end of our lives.

Hearing loss is more related to exposure to excessive high frequency noise, than age.

There is much that we do not know about hearing, one scientific journal was
reporting that sensors in the eye retina, pick up frequencies far above 20kHz

Hopefully this will go some way to dispersing some of the concerns regarding the validity of experiencing high quality sound as the years pass. In a future article we shall talk about why a small minority of people do not seem to hear the differences that others rave about. Part of this discussion will go through why the ability to hear even minor differences is important and how to succeed in hearing them.
